FCSLA In the Community: Branches Giving Back

Youngstown District Awards Scholarships

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, Beachwood, Ohio, announced the 225 winners of scholarships totaling $255,000 that were awarded nationally to its members. The Youngstown District garnered 21 scholarships, totaling $30,000.

District President, Bernadette Demechko, has sent letters of invitation to the winners who will be honored at a Scholarship Dinner, Sunday, August 23, 2009, at The Elm Tree in Struthers, Ohio.

Winners from the area include:

Graduate Level - $1,750

College Level - $1,750

Catholic High School - $1,250

Catholic Elementary School - $750

The Katherine L. Sedlacko Family Trust Scholarships of $500 were won by
Theresa Leonard (High School) and Nicholas Ezzo (Elementary), Youngstown.

The Anna S. Granchay District College Scholarship ($250) was won by Kimberly Ezzo, Youngstown.

The FCSLA is the largest Slovak fraternal society in the United States, with assets of $525,000,000. Because of its non-profit status, the organization also donates $100,000 to various charities annually, and has a "matching funds" program for its members to help raise money for area church and school activities.
