Fraternalist of the Year - 2007

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association is pleased to announce that Dennis
L. Povondra of Tabor, South Dakota has been selected as the Association's 2007
Fraternalist of the year. Dennis's profile has now been sent on to the National
Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) to be considered for national recognition.
The NFCA Fraternalist of the Year will be chosen and honored at the 121st National
Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA in September.
Dennis is a member of Branch W093 in Tabor, SD where he has been a regular
participant in branch activities, including attending meetings, working at
branch sponsored lunches and dances, and even serving as St. Nick for the annual
Christmas meeting.
Dennis is serving in his 32nd year as Business Manager for the Bon Homme School
District 304-2 in Tyndall, SD. He is Treasurer for the Bon Homme Schools Foundation
and Co-Chairman of the High School's music department spaghetti supper fundraiser,
which served over 500 people. He was also the recipient of the 2007 South Dakota
Outstanding School Business Official award.
Dennis is an active member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church where he
is a lector and greeter. He has worked shifts at the annual parish bazaar and
assisted with the annual spring church and cemetery clean up. He is currently
updating in color the pictorial history book of many symbols and historical
significance of artifacts in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church of Tabor.
He is a director of the Czech Preservation Society, president of the Tabor
Development Corporation, and publicity and advertising chairman of the Tabor
Czech Days. He applied for and received the South Dakota Great Events Campaign
Grant for this year's Czech Days celebration. This grant was one of only four
grants awarded by the South Dakota State Tourism Department.
Dennis was awarded the South Dakota State Historical Society Governor's Award
for History in 2006. The individual grant award recognized a person whose efforts
demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in the sharing,
collection, preservation and interpretation of South Dakota history.
Congratulations to Dennis Povondra on receiving this well deserved honor.
It is obvious that Dennis is a true fraternalist generously giving of his time
and talents to make the world around him a better place to live.
